What God wants from us

Image
Sanctimonious people around the world will say God wants you to do this... God wants you to do that.. God wants donation money, grandiose temples, beautiful mosques, fully furnished churches, massive fan base, lifelong celibacy, to do drugs, to not do drugs, animal sacrifice and whatnot.  The list of Man's interpretation of God's expectations is endless, confusing and sometimes bizarre, across all cultures. But here is a thing.. Has anyone considered that maybe all that the gods are requesting for, is only a high-five perhaps? I mean, just look at them.  (Occam's razor: Simpler explanations are more likely to be correct; avoid unnecessary or improbable assumptions.) And we have left them hanging for a long long time. No wonder they seem to be losing patience and goodwill.

I did the Facebook

Mildly funny story my colleague once told me.  One day, my colleague and her siblings were visiting her mom for dinner. Lazing around past dinner, they decide to set up a Facebook profile for their 60 year old mom. My colleague added a few of their family friends to the profile, liked a few pages, walked through the main features and was successfully convincing her mom that social media not that difficult after all. The mom was also coming out of her skepticism and was quickly getting handy with the application.  A week goes by to the above mentioned event and one afternoon my colleague receives a phone call from her mother. "I did it , I did the Facebook, it was fun!" proclaimed her mother on the phone. The daughter was slightly surprised, "What do you mean, you did the Facebook?" she inquired. To which the mom replied "I completed the Facebook, I spent the whole week scrolling, and I finally reached to the end of it. I am done with it."

What? Why am I so interested in DFW you ask? Before I go on, a short disclaimer; Nothing really qualifies me to talk about DFW, I have watched several of the guy's interviews but haven't really finished through his books yet, nor am I an expert in literature or one of those people who study other people for a living. Apart from the reasons that you clearly asked for it, I write this just to document what makes me curious about DFW from the little that I know about him, and before I delve into his work. The first reason I am interested in DFW is because of sheer boredom. Not in the sense that I am bored and I find DFW entertaining, but boredom as an entity in itself. I think DFW successfully managed to dissect post modern life and isolate this component of boredom, which usually is taken as an absence of something instead of a thing in itself. Most of the time, it does not even make it to the table for any analysis or discussion. Of course, if it is treated as an absence of some...
